To Repair or Replace Your Dishwasher Rack: Which Is Better?

When our dishwasher rack started showing signs of wear, mainly rust, we began to ponder what the best solution would be – repair or replace?

Many homeowners assume replacement is the only solution, but depending on the damage, repairing may be a feasible option. Some signs of wear in a dishwasher rack are rust spots, chipped coating, broken tines, and damaged wheels. Replacing the entire rack is certainly easier, but it is often more expensive, and the repair may not be that difficult. Before deciding to purchase a brand-new rack, it’s worth considering the benefits of repairing the dishwasher rack instead.

REPAIRING IS MORE COST-EFFECTIVE

Arguably the strongest point for repairing a dishwasher rack rather than replacing it is money. It is almost always cheaper to repair a rack than to replace it. Replacement dishwasher racks can be expensive, especially for premium or discontinued models. A new rack can cost hundreds of dollars in some cases. At that price point, one starts to wonder whether replacing the entire dishwasher makes more sense, which seems unnecessary for some broken tines or a little bit of rust.

Repairing damaged areas such as rusted sections, chipped vinyl coating, or broken tines is usually much more affordable, and ultimately accomplishes the goal of restoring the rack’s functionality.

REPAIRING IS LESS HASSLE, BUT MAY TAKE MORE TIME

Another reason to repair a dishwasher rack rather than replace it is to avoid the hassle of finding a compatible replacement rack. Dishwasher manufacturers often update models and discontinue parts. Depending on how old your dishwasher is, it may be difficult to find a replacement rack that fits your model. Or you may not be able to find one at all. Even if a replacement dishwasher rack is available, it may be difficult to figure out the correct size and configuration needed. Repairing the dishwasher rack instead eliminates these availability and compatibility concerns.

That being said, there is the hassle of actually repairing the dishwasher rack. It will likely take longer to repair the dishwasher rack than to replace it. Since repairing it will involve more work than just pulling out the old rack and putting in a new one. However, when you factor in the time spent researching a compatible dishwasher rack, the time spent repairing may be closer to the overall time spent replacing.

REPAIRING IS MORE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY

Additionally, repairing a dishwasher rack instead of replacing it is more environmentally friendly. Repairing instead of replacing reduces waste and helps keep usable materials out of landfills. Plus, it also reduces the impact on resources and energy that manufacturing and shipping new appliance parts causes. If you’re trying to make more sustainable choices, then repairing is a simple way to reduce your environmental impact.

WHEN IS REPLACING THE BETTER OPTION?

While repairing may be better than replacing because it’s more cost-effective, less hassle, and more environmentally friendly, that doesn’t always mean it’s the correct choice. There are situations where replacement makes more sense.

The most common situation in which it makes more sense to replace than repair is when the damage is severe. Extensive structural damage, severe corrosion, or multiple broken sections may be too much to repair. In that case, replacing definitely makes more sense.

Another situation where it makes more sense to replace is if you’re looking for a longer-lasting solution. A dishwasher rack repair most likely will not last as long as a dishwasher rack replacement. If you choose to repair the dishwasher rack, it’s likely the repair will only last a year or two before you need to repair it again. So if you’re looking to have the rack fixed and not think about it again for years, then replacing the dishwasher rack is the correct choice for you.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Overall, a damaged dishwasher rack doesn’t necessarily mean a costly replacement. There are many cases where a dishwasher rack repair will suffice, restoring functionality and preventing further deterioration at a fraction of the cost.

Whether you choose to repair or replace, if your dishwasher shows signs of rust, peeling coating, or broken components, my main piece of advice is to act as soon as possible, before the damage gets worse.
