About two years ago, I decided to spot-repair our rusting dishwasher rack instead of replacing it. At the time of the repair, the dishwasher was working perfectly, but the coating on a few sections of the rack had worn off, exposing the metal underneath and causing rust to form.
After considering the pros and cons of replacing versus repairing the rack, repairing made more sense for our situation. Rather than spending well over $100 on a replacement dishwasher rack, I used ReRack Dishwasher Rack Repair, a rack repair coating, to cover the damaged areas and stop the rust from spreading. The repair was affordable, relatively easy to achieve, and initially seemed like a great solution.
Now that it’s been about two years, I wanted to give an honest update on how the dishwasher rack repair has held up. If you’re wondering how long a dishwasher rack repair lasts, or whether it’s worth trying to repair before buying a replacement, here’s what happened in our experience.
THE ORIGINAL PROBLEM AND SOLUTION
Before repairing our rack about two years ago, I noticed rust spots appearing on the dishwasher rack where the protective coating had worn away. The rust didn’t affect the dishwasher’s performance, so I initially just left it as is. But as time wore on, it became clear that the rust was getting worse and, if left untreated, it would eventually eat through the metal entirely. I was also worried about the rust staining and damaging the dishes.
After researching my options, I chose to repair the rack using a rack repair coating rather than replacing the entire rack.
At the time, my goal wasn’t to create a permanent fix. It was simply to stop the rust from spreading and extend the life of the dishwasher rack for as little money as possible.

THE FIRST YEAR: A SUCCESSFUL REPAIR
The first year after applying the rack repair coating was an absolute success. The rust was gone from the affected areas, and the rack coating was no longer peeling.
Even better than that, the repair held up through regular use. We run our dishwasher about 4-5 times per week, meaning that the rack is consistently exposed to hot water, detergent, and the wear and tear of loading and unloading dishes. Even with all that use, the coating remained intact, and I saw no signs of rust for the first year. The rack continued functioning just as it had before.
Considering the minimal cost of the rack repair coating compared to the price of a replacement rack, I would overall call the project a success during the first year.
THE TWO YEAR UPDATE: THE RUST RETURNS
That being said, past the year mark, I began noticing small signs that the repair was starting to wear down.
The first signs were minor. Small spots of rust appeared on some of the repaired locations. They were little at first, but eventually grew and became more noticeable.
By the two-year mark, several of the repaired areas showed visible rust. Those areas that were more severely rusted when I initially repaired them were the first areas to show rust, and have more rust showing overall. Basically, the worse off the rack section was for the repair, the less time that the repair held up.
This isn’t that surprising overall. Dishwasher racks endure harsh environments. They are exposed to:
- Hot water during every wash cycle
- Dishwasher detergents
- Constant moisture
- Temperature changes
- Physical impacts from dishes
Even a well-applied dishwasher rack coating is still covering damaged metal rather than replacing it. Eventually, enough wear occurs to undo the repair work and the coating begins to break down.

DISHWASHER RACK REPAIR TIMELINE: QUICK SUMMARY
For a quick reference of how long a dishwasher rack repair lasts, here’s a summary of our experience over the last two years.
| TIME AFTER REPAIR | CONDITION |
| Immediately After | Rust covered and sealed |
| 6 Months | No visible issues |
| 12 Months | Still holding up well, but some small spots of rust are visible on the initially more damaged areas |
| 18 Months | Small spots of rust have grown a bit larger |
| 24 Months | Rust visible in several repaired areas and metal is beginning to corrode |
While every dishwasher and household is different, this timeline provides a realistic expectation of what a repaired dishwasher rack may look like, based on our experience.
WHAT FAILED FIRST?
Looking back at how the repair held up, it’s interesting to note that the repair didn’t fail all at once. Instead, the coating gradually wore down in the areas that were the most damaged initially before the repair. Some of the other repaired areas remained in surprisingly good condition.
In fact, here are photos from two other areas that were repaired at the same time as the damaged area featured in my How to Fix a Rusting Dishwasher Rack tutorial. Unfortunately, I did not take any before photos of these areas that I repaired, but the photos below were taken at the same time for the two-year update as the photo above.

Based on how these three repair spots held up over two years, I would suggest repairing the dishwasher rack as soon as you spot rust. The sooner the repair happens, the better and longer-lasting the results will be.
WHAT I PLAN TO DO BASED ON WHAT I’VE LEARNED
Looking back, there are a few things I would consider doing differently, and a few new strategies I plan to implement moving forward based on what I’ve learned.
I have learned that catching and fixing small areas of rust early makes the repair easier and last longer. Therefore, I plan to perform a routine inspection every year. I also plan to keep a bottle of dishwasher rack repair coating on hand to make any necessary touch-ups after the inspection.
Overall, the biggest lesson I’ve learned from this project is that repairing a rusted dishwasher rack is a maintenance strategy rather than a permanent solution. For someone who doesn’t mind a bit of periodic maintenance, touching up the repair every year or so may be a perfectly reasonable approach.
WAS THE DISHWASHER RACK REPAIR WORTH IT?
For my situation, absolutely. The repair cost only a fraction of what a replacement dishwasher rack would have cost. The savings are substantial for a repair that is pretty easy to do.
Even though the rust eventually returned, the repair provided about a year of rust-free performance and extended the life of the rack; that’s a great return on a very small investment.
Would a dishwasher rack have been the easier long-term solution? Probably. There is definitely something to be said for installing a new rack and being done with it. A replacement rack eliminates the need for ongoing touch-ups and provides an easier, less effort fix.
There are many factors to consider when debating whether to repair or replace a dishwasher rack, but the biggest downside to the replacement option is the much higher cost. Replacement dishwasher racks can cost over a hundred dollars, and maybe even more if you have an older model where parts are difficult to find.
For homeowners looking to save money and get additional life out of an aging dishwasher, repairing a rusting dishwasher rack remains a practical option.

BOTTOM LINE: A BUDGET-FRIENDLY WIN (WITH MAINTENANCE)
Our dishwasher rack repair lasted approximately one year before rust returned and has continued providing usable service for two full years after the repair was completed.
While the repair wasn’t permanent, it accomplished exactly what I hoped: extending the life of the dishwasher rack while avoiding the cost of immediate replacement. Overall, I still think using a rack coating to repair a rusting dishwasher rack is an excellent short-term solution.
If you’re dealing with a rusting dishwasher rack and want the most budget-friendly solution, I would still recommend trying a dishwasher rack repair first. It’s just important to go into the repair with realistic expectations. Choosing to repair the dishwasher rack isn’t necessarily a one-and-done solution; it’s more of a maintenance strategy. If you’re good with that and willing to repair it every year or so, then it will definitely save you money.
For our household, the repair was absolutely worth it. Even though the rust has returned, I don’t regret repairing the dishwasher rack, and would choose this budget-friendly option again.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
In our experience, the repair worked great for about one year before showing signs of rust. Minor rust returned around the 18-month mark, with more significant rust and metal corrosion visible after two years. However, the rack is still usable two years later.
Yes. When applied correctly, dishwasher rack repair coating can stop existing rust from spreading and protect the exposed metal. However, the coating wears down over time due to the harsh environment dishwashers create.
If your goal is to save money and you are willing to perform maintenance, then repairing it is the better short-term solution.
If your goal is a long-term solution that requires little to no maintenance, then replacing the dishwasher rack might be the better choice for you.
